Michele found a fail-safe remedy to every bad hair day by sporting wigs, but by covering up her real hair she discovered a fun-loving part of herself.

Michele's Story

"I don't have good hair."

I have curly, frizzy hair, and I am very fussy about it. When people with curly, frizzy hair get it blow dried straight, they get very obsessed about the way it looks, and it never looks right. People with straight hair just don't comprehend it because they just get out of the shower and their hair is straight. Curly hair is much harder to deal with, so I started wearing wigs.

"Wigs are great for emergencies."

I use wigs when I have a bad hair day and I don't want to wash my hair, or if I am going to a business meeting and I want to look appropriate and my hair is sticking like glue to my head because I didn't have time to fix it. A wig is just a time saver.

I have one wig that is like my own hair that I use when I can't get to my hair dresser for important events. When he isn't available, the wig is. I would much rather have my real hair fresh, of course, but what is great about the wigs is that they are for bad hair days. I wear this wig when I just want to get away with being me.

"People care about their hair, whether they have some and how it looks on their head."

Hair is a big deal to me. I have thinning hair because I am older and closer to menopausal age, so the wigs help me with that. You can also try out a new haircut without cutting your hair, which is a very good thing because if you cut your hair and you hate it, it can't grow back in five seconds. They are also just about having fun and experimenting. I've been out with friends standing right next to them while they're saying, "Where is Michele?" and they don't recognize me. It is fun to be a different person for a little while.

"I gave my husband a fantasy for $22, plus tax."

I found one wig just after I'd gotten a massage and my hair was glued to my head. My friends invited me out at the last minute, and I saw a wig store across the street. I was very impulsive and I bought it. I put it on and I was like, "I feel great having this wig on, this hair is beautiful." I came home with it and gave my husband a fantasy - with the high heels and the hair -- and he loved it. He wasn't upset at all that I spent money on this. It worked out for him really well. It was a fantasy I provided for someone else, and I had a good time and for $22, plus tax.

"Life should be about having fun and making changes, and wigs let you do both."

I love wigs. They are easier than my real hair, they are low budget, they are fun, and they help you feel good about yourself. It is just fun to be different. It is fun to get out of your own skin sometimes. That is what life should be about; it is not about being serious at every moment. It is about change. It is either you can go with that change and have fun, or you can resist it and miss out.
